The University of Kwazulu-Natal's School of Education spans amongst many different courses in education, including the Bachelor of Education degree. The University of Kwazulu-Natal (UKZN) aims to establish a value-driven organisational culture that empowers the Institution and its people to achieve institutional goals.

The School of Education is located on two sites namely, Edgewood (Pinetown) and Pietermaritzburg. The School offers a wide range of undergraduate degrees and diplomas as well as postgraduate certificates, Honours, Masters and Doctoral studies programmes.

The School of Education offers an internationally recognised initial teacher education programmes (Bachelor of Education degrees) that qualifies you to teach in any school in South Africa.

This Bachelor of Education qualification is a four year programme. About the programme, UKZN says, "The programme is a vocationally specific, professional degree that integrates, from the first year, both the academic study and the professional preparation required to be a teacher".

There are three specialisation offered with the BED programme:

Foundation phase (grade1-3): specialising with: 

  • isiZulu (Home Language)
  • English (First additional language)

Intermediate phase (grades4-6): specialising with:

  • Mathematics and Social Sciences OR
  • Natural Science/Technology and Social Science

Senior (grade 7-9)and Further Education and training phase(Grade 10-12): specialising with one of the following 14 options

  • FET Accounting and Senior phase Economic Management Science and Creative arts
  • FET Computer Science and Senior phase Technology Education and Mathematics
  • FET English and Senior phase English and Economic Management Science
  • FET English and Senior phase English and Social Science
  • FET History and Senior phase Geography and English
  • FET History and Senior phase Geography and isiZulu
  • FET Information Systems and Senior phase Technology and Economic Management Science
  • FET Information Systems and Senior phase Technology and Mathematics
  • FET isiZulu and Senior phase isiZulu and Economic Management Science
  • FET isiZulu and Senior phase isiZulu and Social Science
  • FET Life Sciences and Senior phase Natural sciences and Technology education
  • FET Life Orientation and Senior phase Life orientation and Social sciences
  • FET Mathematics and Senior phase Mathematics and Technology education
  • FET Physical Sciences and Senior phase Natural sciences and Mathematics

The entry requirements for the BEd degree are as follows:

Due to limited space, fulfilling all the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee acceptance into a programme. Preliminary admission is based on the results obtained in the final Grade 11 examination. Final admission is based on the final Grade 12 results.

The School of Education has strong national reputations for teacher education programmes, adult education, workplace learning and higher education. A wide variety of programmes are offered at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Prospective students are urged to discuss their needs with the relevant staff at two centres.
