Potential host employers were afforded the opportunity to meet with students for Work Integrated Learning opportunities in 2023 at False Bay TVET College's Career Fair. A host of benefits resulted from this engagement, not only do students get to practice their interview skills, learn about industry trends but it also presented fantastic networking opportunities.

Following the TVET Colleges Strategic Industry Partnerships Summit hosted early this year, False Bay TVET College hosts its annual Career Fair from 14-20 October 2022.

Creating an opportunity for students to interact with employers, students are introduced to future potential employers as well as learn about employment and internship opportunities. All exit level students from the colleges 5 campuses (Fish Hoek, Muizenberg, Khayelitsha, Westlake and Mitchells Plain) were invited to participate, including engineering programmes. The 5 day – 5 campus roadshows brought together organisations related to the campus programme offering, facilitating quality engagements. Potential host employers were afforded the opportunity to meet with students for Work Integrated Learning opportunities in 2023.

This escalates the placement process of students find suitable host employers. Potential employers had the opportunity to view the colleges facilities and engaged with the lecturers responsible for the calibre of students ready to enter the world of work.

A host of benefits resulted from this engagement, not only do students get to practice their interview skills, learn about industry trends but it also presented fantastic networking opportunities.

Ms Monica Lekay, Work Integrated Learning Manager said:

We had an overwhelming support and interest from our loyal Industry partners, allowing them to select prospective candidates for 2023. Students were very well prepared, dressed, and ready to be interviewed by employers.

"We would like to thank all the campus management and staff for their cooperation and hospitality in accommodating the employers and ensuring that their campus is well exposed and advertised. This event allows the students to be better prepared to enter the workplace in 2023.

We are planning to have our next set of Career fairs again in May and August 2023 and I would hereby like to invite employers to make use of this opportunity to come and hand pick your prospective candidates during the available time slots.

First time participants in the Colleges Career Fair, the South African Police Services (SAPS) enlightened the students with the endless career possibilities available at SAPS.

SAPS representative said in the student address, “There is more than chasing the criminals, all the different departments are actively involved when a request is received from the community by the Community Service Centres. From issuing uniforms, to fixing vehicles, through the Supply Chains, Admin, Finance, It and HR Services Departments.”

As a result of this engagement, the Colleges Panel beating, Spray painting and Motor Mechanics classes will be visiting the SAPS workshops for further cooperation.

Other companies in attendance included Mitchells Plain Educare Forum, Victoria Hospital, Mitchells Plain Ward Cousellor, Home Choice; Khayelitsha Development Forum, Department of Labour; The Nest- Educare; SA Red Cross Mercy Service Trust; SAPS, False Bay College Centre for Entrepreneurship; Bank Seta, Mzanzi Business; MSC Cruise Ships; Trips and Beyond; DBD Solutions; SPAR; The Student Hub, Bracken Electrical and Harris Electrical.

This year, the College has successfully signed 445 host work agreements in 2022, which has contributed to the 76% placement rate of students in 2021!
