The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has stated that applications for the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) will close on the 16th of October 2022. Therefore, interested individuals are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

PYEI aims to create employment opportunities for unemployed youth in South Africa within various government departments. The Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) partnered with the DBE to achieve the PYEI’s goal.

Before applying, individuals are urged to gather the necessary application documents together to ensure that they submit a successful application. Applicants may visit the SAYouth.mobi website to see which application documents are needed.

Young people between the ages of 18 and 34 years old may apply to become a teacher’s assistant. Applicants may register via the SAYouth.mobi online recruitment system.

The SAYouth.mobi website is free to use and does not require any data. The system reduces bias, non-compliance, and subjectivity to the requirements of the employment initiative.

Recently, the BEEI finished its third phase of the programme, where approximately 280 000 young people were placed in schools as general school assistants and teacher assistants. The third phase ended at the end of August 2022.

According to the Basic Education Department, those who took part in the programme previously will not qualify for placement in the fourth phase of the initiative. This ensures that others are afforded the opportunity to gain work experience and also acquire the necessary skills for future employment.

The Presidency, Basic Education Department and Provincial Education Departments have thanked all the young people who have assisted schools since the initiative started in 2022. They have urged the youth to continue to use the knowledge, skills and competencies they have gained during their time in the programme in future endeavours.
