The Western Cape Education Department’s (WCED) invigilators and markers have recently undergone training for the upcoming National Senior Certificate final examinations.

The department has shared that the exams will be overseen by 1,889 invigilators at 478 examination centres.

Basic Education had confirmed NSC examinations 2022 will kick-off with English Home Language, First Additional Language, and Second Additional Language on 31 October 2022 and the exam period will then conclude on 7 December 2022 in all nine provinces.

The learners and their parents will then wait it out until the Education Department publishes their matric results. In a statement, WCED Minister David Mayenier has confirmed:

The national results will be announced on 19 January 2023, and individual results will be available at schools and online on 20 January 2023.

Mayenier appealed to social organisations, political groups, and communities to ensure that exams can take place without disruption, and not compromise this cohort's chances in any way.

Sharing the same sentiment, Umalusi Chief Executive Officer, Dr Mafu Rakometsi has issued a stern warning to both learners and teachers to refrain from all forms of cheating, including group copying where teachers are sometimes implicated.

Rakometsi has also pointed out that this act compromises the integrity of the national examination system.

National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa executive Thirona Moodley has highlighted that this cohort entered the FET phase when the country was faced with the Covid-19 pandemic, enduring two years of learning in a historic pandemic.

Moodley has encouraged parents and matriculants to take the baton from the teachers and sprint to the finish line.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union has indicated that there needs to be more focus on the quality of teaching and learning when measuring the overall results upon completion of the exams.
