Are you attending University of the Free State or you're planning to in the future? Trying to figure out how you're going to pay your fees? Here's whether you'll be covered by the NSFAS bursary.

The NSFAS bursary is government's pledge to providing free education to poor students. This bursary is geared towards studies at either one of the 26 Public Universities or 50 TVET Colleges.

Seeing that UFS is a South African public University, students from there will then be eligible to be funded by NSFAS, should they meet the rest of the requirements.

NSFAS requirements to be funded are as follows:

  • Household income should come to less than R350 000 per year
  • If you're a person living with a disability, the above threshold is then R600 000
  • SASSA recipients immediately qualify
  • Must be a South African citizen

The NSFAS bursary is an all round bursary which will cover your registration fees, tuition fees, books, transport, accommodation, meals and other living costs in the form of NSFAS allowances.

NSFAS unfortunately only funds undergraduate programmes and not postgraduate qualifications.

Should you be asking whether your age is a factor, it is not and NSFAS does not have an age limit. If you meet the requirements, you will be funded.

NSFAS applications open every year during August/September and close in November/December.

Visit the NSFAS website or the UFS NSFAS page here for more information.
