Nnoni Mokgethi, Traxtion Brand, Communications and Marketing Manager, said these bursaries aim to increase female representation in the rail sector in South Africa. She said:

Traxtion believes strongly that we need to actively promote the rail sector as an attractive working environment for women to diversify the sector. Traxtion has a strong history of supporting training initiatives, and this is another step in our support of employment opportunities within the rail sector.

One of the greatest motivators for getting more women into the workplace is wealth creation. “Throughout the world, it has been proven that when women are economically active, economies grow. By energetically promoting women in the rail sector, we can be a catalyst for change.

Traxtion is at the forefront of a campaign aimed at diversifying the rail workforce – the Future of Rail is Women campaign – and we are investing substantial resources to back this cause,” Mokgethi said.

Bursaries are open for the following disciplines:

  • Mechanical engineers
  • Electrical engineers
  • Diesel mechanics
  • Boiler makers
  • Fitters and Turners

Applications for the bursaries open on December 1, 2024, and close on December 15, 2024. Applications are open to women (18 to 35) who have been accepted by a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

The student must be admitted and/or registered to study in the year 2025 towards a National Diploma. Students who apply must demonstrate an average 60% (minimum C symbol) of academic performance in their final matric results.

Preference will be given to students who have an excellent academic record, are from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, possess a valid South African identity document and reside in these provinces: North West, Free State and Gauteng (Traxtion’s area of operations).

Mokgethi said bursaries are for TVET colleges in the areas that the students live in. The bursaries will be for the duration of the studies, between nine and 18 months depending on the study field.

  • The applications for bursaries must be submitted online between December 1 and 15. No late applications will not be considered. Applications can be made at: https://traxtion.africa/
