Angie Motshegka, the Basic Education Minister, stated that the Class of 2020 obtained a matric pass rate of 76.2%. Although it is a 5.1% decrease from 2019, Motshekga is still pleased by the number and quality of the passes.

The Basic Education Department would like to focus on those matric learners who did not pass and the interventions required to assist them to rewrite.

These learners will also need support and assistance with maintaining good mental wellbeing.

Professor Ramodungoane Tabane, the Chair of the Department for Psychology of Education at the University of South Africa, states that there are many different options for these learners.

These options include repeating Grade 12, rewriting certain subjects, and studying certain programmes at TVET colleges that do not require a matric certificate.

Learners are reminded that failing does not mean that they have reached the end of the road, but that there are ways for them to still achieve their dreams.

With regards to staying positive during a time like this, learners need to surround themselves with encouraging individuals who want to see them achieve greatness.

These learners are urged to research and find out which option would suit them the best and help them reach their goals.
