Applications for lost and re-issues of matric certificate can be done at any of the Departments of Education, irrespective of where you wrote your matric.

It takes between four to six weeks for a Replacement certificate to be issued if your records are still active on the system. However, you can obtain your statement of results immediately.

If your records are not on the system, it will take longer as records needs to be retrieved from the Archives and loaded on the system. If the certificate is damaged, you must return the damaged certificate to the Department of Basic Education (DBE) or Provincial Education Department (PED).

Important details to note for the replacement of your matric certificate:

  • Pay the prescribed fee by postal order at the Post Office, cash at DBE / PED office or by cheque.
  • Go to the nearest DBE/ PED offices with the following documents:
  • The original national/senior certificate (if it is damaged), this is not applicable if it is lost
  • You can download a form, fill it in and post it with the attached documents including the postal order to: Private Bag X895, Pretoria, 0001
  • It will cost you R141.00 for the replacement certificate, and if you want a statement of results, it will cost you an additional R52.00.
  • To get an affidavit you must go to a police station. An affidavit proves that your certificate is actually lost so that you can apply for a new one. This will include what happened to the certificate such as a fire or robbery.
  • Your ID: You have to have your original ID and a certified copy. This can be done at the police station.

Take note of the following:

  • Many employers ask to see matric certificates before they employ people. If you do not have one, the chances of you finding employment are far lower. Apply for a re-issue instead of going without one.
  • You cannot go to university without a matric certificate. Some courses also do not allow you to start without a matric certificate.
