If you are unsatisfied with your matric results then you may want to apply for a rewrite to improve these results.
If you wish to write the matric exam and you have been out of school for more than 5 years then you can apply for the Amended Senior Certificate (SC), which is equivalent to the National Senior Certificate (NSC). The physical SC looks exactly the same as the NSC.
The only difference between the NSC and the SC is that the NSC many you have completed matric through school assessments and exams but, the SC is only requires you to successfully complete the matric exams.
The requirements to qualify for the Amended National Senior Certificate are as follows:
- You have a grade 9 certificate, OR
- You have not completed your matric certificate,
- You are over the age of 21 when you write your examinations. However, you can be 19 years old when you apply.
You will need the following documents in order to register for your Amended Senior Certificate:
South African Nationals:
- Your completed registration form.
- A certified copy of your ID or birth certificate.
- For students who have written a grade 12 or equivalent exam before application, they must provide proof of the respective examination numbers.
Foreign Nationals:
- Certified copy of your passport.
- Proof of highest qualification.
- Proof of study permit.
The Department of Basic Education facilitates Matric rewrites through the Second Chance Matric Programme. The Programme provides support for NSC Supplementary Exams, NSC Progressed Learners, Amended Senior Certificate (SC) and Part-time NSC Candidates.
If a student does not manage to pass their matric exam it does not mean that they will never be able to obtain their matric qualification. You can apply to rewrite your matric year again, though you would have to wait slightly longer to achieve your academic goals.
There are several opportunities to get the matric qualification, such as Matric upgrade which is for those who wish to improve the marks of certain subjects without having to rewrite all the matric exams and Adult Matric which is for those who have been out of school for more than 5 years and wish to complete matric.
