Unisa NSFAS Allowance 2024
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is increasing the allowances it pays to funded students in 2024. This includes allowances for university students, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and allowances for students studying at distance learning institutions.
As part of the comprehensive funding provided by NSFAS, funded students received several allowances. These allowances cover transport expenses, living expenses, learning material costs and even accommodation costs.
However, students enrolled at distance learning universities like the University of South Africa (Unisa) do not qualify for all these allowances. This is because students at distance learning don’t accrue the same expenses as other students.
Here’s How Much NSFAS Allowances For Unisa Students
Allowances for students in distance education programmes are calculated based on the number of courses registered up to a maximum of R5,460.
Distance University students studying an equivalent full-time course credit load qualify for the personal care allowance of R3,045 per academic year.
This requires a student to be registered for a minimum of 120-course credits in one academic year.

When Will Unisa Students Get Their Allowance 2024
The NSFAS chairperson held a media briefing to explain the latest developments at the student funding organisation. He also announced that Unisa students would receive their NSFAS allowances including learning material allowances and incidental allowances from Wednesday 15th March 2024. Those students who did not choose the laptop option would have their funds sent to them from the 22nd March.
NSFAS Payment Dates 2024
There is some confusion this year for students as NSFAS has said that universities will make direct payments to students for the first two months of the year. However after that direct payments will revert to the fintech providers who were contracted to make payments to students. However again, these fintech providers are still to be phased out by NSFAS and their contracts will be cancelled once new arrangements can be made. How Much Is Living Allowance for Unisa Students
The NSFAS living allowance for university students is R15,000 per year.
