Avbob has launched an educational support programme called ‘Avbob STEP 12’, which aims to help matric learners get ready for their finals by providing them with free study guides that are available in all 11 official languages.
The programme is geared specifically at the language subjects in the Grade 12 syllabus and provides a different exam preparation guide for each of the three language papers required to pass these compulsory subjects: language in context, literature, and creative writing.
“With Step 12, Avbob introduces a new channel to deliver on our commitment to supporting education in SA, alongside our ongoing investments in literacy programmes, schools’ infrastructure, container libraries and the support of poetic arts,” says Avbob CEO Carl van der Riet.
We hope that the Avbob Step 12 initiative will serve as a blueprint for teacher and learner assistance and that other segments of the private sector will come on board and design similar programmes for other grade 12 subjects, such as mathematics, physical sciences and business studies.
Avbob says that although the Avbob Step 12 examination preparation guides are aimed at grade 12 learners, they can also be used by grade 11s, who stand to benefit from exposure to matric syllabus preparation.
Department of Basic Education Approval
According to Avbob, the study guides were developed in conjunction with language subject specialists and the content has been informed on the needs of the teachers who were consulted in the process.
The Step 12 study guides are based on the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) prescribed by the Department of Basic Education (DBE).
The department has welcomed the initiative and emphasised their shared goal to continually improve learner performance and noted that the AVBOB STEP 12 material is a valuable additional resource to learner development.
DBE spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga noted:
We are conveying our message of gratitude to Avbob who have taken it upon themselves to create a learner support material but also teacher guides to assist in the preparations for the final grade 12 exams.
Mhlanga says that this intervention is going to be a huge assist for learners who need support in revising their language subjects.
He adds, “We know this because every time after an exam we conduct an analysis, and we know what learners are struggling with and we therefore needed to come together with the private sector.”
How To Access Avbob STEP 12
Mhlanga says the department has ensured that the content is freely available to all learners as they do not want learners to incur any costs when trying to access the materials
Matric learners and teachers can access the guides by doing the following:
- The AVBOB STEP 12 guides can be downloaded for FREE at https://www.avbobstep12.co.za/
- The AVBOB STEP 12 Facebook page (www.facebook.com/AVBOBSTEP12) provides a rendezvous for Grade 12 teachers.
Furthermore, the department has encouraged all Grade 12 language teachers and educators of matric learners to embrace the Avbob Step 12 Examination Preparation Guides.
In addition, educators and schools have also been urged to help learners in assessing and navigating the study guides as they prepare for the final exams.
