The final Matric exams for the 2023 school year finished on 6 December with Matric results scheduled to be released on 19 January. 2023 saw almost a million grade 12 learners sit down to write their final National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams at more than 400 exam centres around the country.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has said that this exam period went smoothly with no exam leaks reported. They are confident about the outcomes of the exam period.

Capturing of matric exam marks has recently been completed with the department currently processing the data collected from marking centres. Spokesperson for the DBE, Elijah Mhlanga, said:

We're preparing for what is called restandardization meetings which are going to take place through the next week until Friday as we prepare to meet Umalusi, who is the quality assurance agency that works with act to make sure that we don't make mistakes.

Matric Results Release Schedule

Umalusi is set to announce the approval of the 2023 Matric exam results on 12 January 2024.

Minister of the department, Angie Motshekga, will announce the results on 18 January. The ministerial announcement will not only reveal pass rates for different provinces but also detail the types of matric passes attained by learners.

The matric results would then be made available to Matrics the following day, as they collect their statement of results from their exam centres. Alternatively, learners can opt to register online to receive their matric results.

Matric results are made available to Higher Education institutions before the matric results are officially released publically, so that Higher Education Institutions can proceed with its selection processes.

"The DBE as done in previous years will ensure strict adherence to its scheduled time frames and there will be no delays that will contribute to the challenges of Higher Education Institutions."
