Sassa Black Cards Now Being Rolled Out Across South Africa

Millions of people living in South Africa rely on social grants to survive every month. Grant beneficiaries can now collect their new Sassa black card.

Sassa distributes millions of permanent grants which are aimed at assisting financially vulnerable individuals in South Africa. Postbank has confirmed that the rollout of new South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) black cards will be rolled out to grant beneficiaries countrywide. 

Grants distributed by Sassa include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid. 

In September 2024, Postbank announced that the new black Mzansi Debit Card will replace the Sassa gold card, previously issued to social grant beneficiaries.

The initial rollout of the Black Cards commenced in Gauteng. The rollout has now been extended to grant beneficiaries in the across South Africa. 

Postbank called on grant beneficiaries to collect their new Sassa cards as soon as possible. 

We are thrilled to commence with the replacement of Sassa Gold Cards with Postbank Black Cards. We urge all Sassa beneficiaries to come collect their new cards as soon as possible and not wait for the last minute. Everyone must go now to collect their new cards during the designated store's operating hours.

Where To Get A New Sassa Card

Postbank provided instructions on what grant beneficiaries must do to find a location that is replacing Sassa cards. 

  • Step 1: Dial *120*355#
  • Step 2: Select option 1
  • Step 3: Choose your province

After completing these steps beneficiaries will see a list of locations where new cards are being issued. 

What To Bring To Get A New Sassa Bank Card 

  • Your ID.
  • If you are collecting a grant on behalf of someone, please also bring the official Sassa proxy letter.
  • Asylum seeker grant beneficiaries should bring the official approval letter from Sassa .

 All the beneficiaries need to bring to be issued with Postbank Black Cards is a valid ID, or a temporary ID. Therefore, beneficiaries that may have lost or misplaced their ID's are urged to obtain a temporary ID to be issued with Black Cards

Benefits of the Postbank Black Card

Postbank said grant beneficiaries will receive several benefits when switching to the Sassa black. including free first card replacements, three free withdrawals at stores per month, and a free monthly statement. Additionally, Postbank says no unauthorised deductions from your account, ensuring your funds are always secure.

"Postbank assures all Sassa gold cards grant recipients that have not been issued with Black cards yet that their Gold Cards will continue to work to collect their grants until they are replaced, so they need not be concerned."
