Postbank launched the Mzansi Debit Card to provide affordable banking solutions to all South Africans. This new offering is available to beneficiaries of the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) grants.

Sassa distributes several permanent grants aimed at assisting financially vulnerable individuals in South Africa.

Grants distributed by Sassa include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid. Sassa is also responsible for the Social Relief of Distress grant, which we know as the SRD grant or R370 Sassa grant.

Postbank announced that the new black Mzansi Debit Card will replace the Sassa gold card, which social grant beneficiaries previously used.

Sassa beneficiaries in Gauteng should collect their new Sassa Postbank Black Card.

The initial rollout of the Sassa Postbank Black Card starts in Gauteng, with card issuance happening at select Boxer and Pick n Pay stores across the province.

What To Bring To Get A New Sassa Bank Card

  • Your ID.
  • If you are collecting a grant on behalf of someone, please also bring the official Sassa proxy letter.
  • Asylum seeker grant beneficiaries should bring the official approval letter from Sassa.

Your grants remain unaffected, and you will continue enjoying the same benefits you're getting  from the Sassa Gold Cards. No one will be left behind. Stay tuned to your radio station for all important information regarding the New Postbank Card reissuing.

Does the Gold Card Still Work?

Postbank has assured beneficiaries that the Gold Card still works to withdraw Sassa grant payments.

Gold Cards are working and will continue to work until Postbank issues every Gold Card beneficiary with a Black Card.

"No one has the right to tell you who to bank with, or change your Sassa Gold card, even if that person is a Sassa official. Only Postbank has the right to replace Sassa Gold Cards."

All About the New Sassa Postbank Black Card

The new card allows individuals to make payments for goods and services without needing cash. It also provides access to ATMs and Post Office branches nationwide for withdrawals and other transactions.

The Mzansi account, available exclusively to South African citizens with a valid ID, links to debit and credit orders to help manage monthly expenses. However, strict limits apply: account balances must not exceed R25,000, and daily withdrawals are capped at R5,000.

Additionally, customers can hold only one account of this type.

Postbank emphasises secure banking for all, ensuring that deposits, including salaries, can be easily made and safely stored. The Mzansi Visa Debit Card offers a reliable and cost-effective banking option.
