Unisans who are part of the College of Education's (CEDU) Engaged Scholarship Project CN4800 team provided Grade 12 learners with Spring classes in October, in preparation for the 2021 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.
The Project was put into action as many Matrics did not get to complete the curriculum in their Grade 11 year in 2020 due to disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Dr Soane J Mohapi, the project leader and Head of Engaged Scholarship at CEDU, said:
The project’s aim is to assist with the achievement of curriculum recovery as well as preparations for the for end-of-year examinations. The focus was on Mathematics, Physical Science and Life Science.
The Project took place within the Libangeni Circuit at the following schools in the Nkangala District: Digwale Secondary School, Kwamanala High School, Hlalakahle High School and Mbulawa Secondary School.
The learners attending the classes formed part of the 700 000 full-time matric students and the 128 451 part-times candidates who will be writing the 2021 NSC exams until 7 December 2021.
Puleng Motseki, a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics Education, focused on the revision of Euclidean geometry. Molebogeng Ramulumo, a lecturer in the Department of Science and Technology Education, undertook exam preparation by teaching the learners how to approach and answer investigative questions. Another lecturer, Thuli Ntuli provided revision on equilibrium constant calculations and electrical circuits.
Dr Mohapi said that the learners were excited that these lecturers had taken time to teach them in their various subjects and felt that they had addressed the issues that the learners previously struggled with.
The learners said they felt ready for their final examinations.
The Project CN4800 Team has appealed to parents and communities across South Africa to support the matrics by providing them with a peaceful environment that allows them to pay attention to their studies.
