The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has urged people to ignore the social media post circulating claiming that there are teaching assistants vacancies. The DBE spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga took to social media platform to announce the advert as fake news.

The alleged fake news post had claimed that the DBE has 3000 vacancies available for teaching assistants. It has further claimed that the contracts will be starting from 1 December to 31 March.
The DBE spokesperson said the right information will be communicated at the right time.
President Cyril Ramaphosa had announced the Presidential Employment Stimulus program in October 2020. The program was meant to cover youth unemployment and open opportunities, particularly in the education sector.
Teaching assistants were highly prioritized in order to minimize pressure on teachers, as well to help the DBE catch up on curriculum activities that were disrupted by Covid-19 lockdowns.
The DBE previously announced in March 2021 through a social media statement that about 300 000 jobs were created for youth to assistant in the education sector.
The stimulus program has however been frequented by controversy as many complained about not being paid or their salaries being delayed.
The DBE had publicized that R7 billion was allocated to the basic education department where an amount of R5 billion was used to employ almost 320 000 young people as teacher assistants and general workers.
The DBE hasn’t come out about continuing with the teaching assistant program in schools, but Mhlanga said the right information will be communicated at the right time.
In addition, the DBE couldn’t confirm if there are post for teaching assistants to be announced in due course.
