From today, 15 October, parents in Gauteng will see their children being offered placements in schools for Grade 1 and Grade 8 for the 2022 school year.

There were 10 schools which received an overwhelming amount of applications, more than what it is able to accommodate. The Gauteng Department of Education has said that they will find space in another school then.

At Parktown Boys High School, there were 1441 qualifying candidates but only 210 could be selected with MEC for Education for the province, Panyaza Lesufi, saying:

We would therefore like to caution parents and guardians that not all applicants would be accommodated at their preferred school. Thus, we appeal for calm and patience from all applicants during this placement period.

Lesufi went on to say, "The department is committed to assist schools at high pressure areas to build more classrooms to accommodate more learners for future admissions."

Inqayizivele Secondary School in Tembisa, which is a township school, received the highest number of applications which Lesufi says shows that the department has changed the landscape in the improvement of township education.

After parents receive an SMS with an offer of a school placement, they will then need to go to the Gauteng Department of Education Admissions website to accept the offer. Parents will have a week after receiving the offer to do this.

This placement period will end on 30 November 2021 so parents can expect an SMS anytime between now and the end of November.

In a statement released by the department, they said:

However, parents and guardians must also note that in the event an SMS states that your child or children are placed at a certain school, this will be regarded as a successful placement to the mentioned school only. There will be no need for a parent/guardian to access the system to accept an offer in that regard.

If the parent does not receive an SMS, they should then head to the GDE Admission website to check if an offer is waiting for them.

If you forgot or lost your credentials, you can click on “Forgot Password” on the GDE admissions landing page and follow the prompts to regain access to the system. Alternatively, parents and guardians can call 0800 000 789 for assistance.

School admissions applications for the Gauteng Province are being done in phases with two already having been completed.
