Learner Dies In Stabbing Incident At School

The Department of Basic Education has once again experienced another fatal stabbing incident between two learners. The stabbing on school grounds has become a common occurrence in South African schools which the department has struggled to address in recent years.

The Department of Education spokesperson in Free State province, Howard Ndaba condemns the fatal stabbing incident between two learners in the province.

 A 13-year-old Free State pupil was stabbed to death by a learner from another school in front of other students on Friday.

The incident happened in Hertzogville, where the victim was in grade 7 at Senzile Combined School and the alleged perpetrator, also 13, was in grade 6 at Kegomoditswe Primary School, said Free State education department spokesperson Howard Ndaba.

The incident is said to have occurred at 14:00 in the afternoon, as the stabbed learner waited for his friends outside school premises.

The department confirmed that psychosocial support will be given to the two affected families and to the learners who witnessed the incident.

Together with the department of social development we will provide psychosocial support to the schools and families of both learners.

Ndaba pleaded with parents to take care interest disciplining their children to curb the continuity of such incidents.

The department spokesperson condemns the acts of carrying dangerous weapons in schools. Ndaba however didn’t share what might have led to the squabble between the two leaners where another died.
