In addition to writing during a pandemic, the matric class of 2021 have had to deal with ongoing power cuts.
Although the Education Department has said that this will have no material impact on matriculants. There have been reports of frustration among educators as load shedding directly impacts a learners' ability to prepare for each exam outside of school.
Mlungisi Ndlovu of the Public Servants Association, which represents some teachers, says that the frustration is rife among its members as well as learners.
The union is calling on the government to take action as this is an issue that has worse consequences in rural schools. Ndlovu adds that, under the current circumstances, it is difficult for educators to come up with alternative solutions.
Joshua Van Ster, a matric pupil from Bernadino Heights High School says that he prepared well in advance for today’s Mathematics exam.
However, the matriculant also admits that due to being unable to study in the dark he usually has to work around the load shedding schedule and resort to other means of acquiring power since he studies at night most of the time.
