The lifeless body of North West University (NWU) Human Resources student, Onkgopotse Kgeletsane, was found in his room in the James Moroka residence on the NWU Mahikeng Campus on 12 June 2022.
It has been reported that since this day, the university’s Student Counselling team has been providing the necessary support to fellow students.
It has been alleged that NWU had issued a statement with false speculations surrounding this incident, that Kgeletsane had passed on after drinking alcohol.
The university said that it is aware of the reports and speculations regarding the causees of the student’s death, and cautions everyone to allow the SAPS to conclude the investigations and report accordingly.
During the funeral ceremony, the family spokesperson, Boitumelo Kgelestane announced:
We are going to sue the university.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Amanda Funani clarified that an inquest docket was registered, but it was changed to murder after a preliminary post-mortem report revealed that the victim died due to head and multiply body injuries.
Kgeletsane’s uncle has shared that the university has not been sympathetic, and pointed out that it was not present at the funeral either.
This comes after the university issued a statement that it has been in contact with the family, and promised to support the family in any way possible.
Currently, no arrests have been made, and the family seeks justice.
