The possibility of 6114 teaching job losses in Kwa-Zulu has become a major concern for the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU).
This comes after the treasury department announced that it would implementing austerity measures that could result in a R6.4 billion budget cut in the KZN provincial education department.
SADTU's NEC said that this could cause instability within the education department, in a way that could have negative consequences for school learners in the province.
The learners cannot be denied the right to education because of austerity measures. Austerity measures are the cause of instability and the education system cannot be subjected to any form of instability because our learners have already suffered huge time losses and trauma due to the pandemic.
The NEC further stated that austerity measures cannot be allowed if government wants to grow an inclusive and sustainable economy that is aimed at creating jobs.
KwaZulu Natal's Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu said the possible impact of these retrenchments may differ from one school to another, depending on existing staff shortages. This may also affect certain subjects, as some schools are yet to complete this year's curriculum.
