The South African Student Congress released a media statement encouraging the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to extend its current cap from R350 000 to R600 000.
Sasco explained that many children of workers are highly disadvantaged and their househoulds income was negatively affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The student organisation's National Executive President, Bamanye Matiwane challenges NSFAS to work with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) to have the current cap revised.
Sasco hopes to see an easy, accessible and safe application process which will be efficient more especially for first time entering students.
He added that there has been a stark rise in cybercrime during the course of 2021. Subsequently, Sasco president said some students have been unable to access their wallets.
Sasco further called on NSFAS, throughout December, to partner with relevant stakeholders and run outreach programmes in rural communities to provide support to prospective students.
NSFAS beneficiaries are advised to be vigilant at all times and keep their details such as passwords and pins in a safe place.
Sasco encourages youth with Grade 12 certificates and current Grade 12 learners to apply for funding from NSFAS.
Prospective students are urged to use the opportunity to apply to public institutions of their choice, such as TVET Colleges and Universities.
The student congress wishes all the best to matriculants that are writing their 2021 exams.
