The University of Venda (Univen) has joined other universities in the country that have opted to implement a mandatory vaccination policy, with effect from 1 January 2022.

This policy would mean that no student would be allowed access to the university's Campus premises unless they can provide proof that they have been vaccinated.

The higher learning institution confirmed in a statement released on Wednesday last week that five of its students tested positive for Covid-19.

The university has further stated that all five students have been put in isolation and management has called on all staff and students to observe all Covid-19 protocols on and off-campus. Staff and students have also been urged to vaccinate.

The University management is committed to implementing this Council resolution in a manner that will not alienate staff and students and other members of the public. We continue to encourage staff and students as well as other stakeholders to get vaccinated.

This comes as several other universities across the country have resolved to implement a mandatory vaccination policy, some of which will come into effect at the beginning of January.

These higher learning institutions include the University of the Free State (UFS, University of Witwatersrand, University of the Western Cape (UWC), and the University of Cape Town(UCT) among others.

The introduction of these precautionary measures by universities follows the recent arrival of a new Covid-19 variant, Omicron, which has now spread across all nine provinces.
