Millions of people are reliant on social grants to purchase essential goods and access services every month. A change in the payment dates may require grant beneficiaries to plan for a longer wait to get their grant payment.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) provides social grants to millions of financially vulnerable people living in South Africa. These grants enable beneficiaries to purchase basic goods and access essential services monthly.

Sassa distributes more than 18 million permanent grants monthly. They include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.

These grants are paid to beneficiaries during the first week of every month. Grant payment dates can be found by viewing the official grant payment schedule.

Here's How Public Holidays Impact Sassa Grant Payments

While Sassa endeavours to pay grants to beneficiaries on consecutive days from the second day of every month, this is not possible. This is because Sassa clarified that they do not process grant payments on weekends and public holidays.

This essentially means that if grant payments start on the second day of the month, and this day is followed by a public holiday or weekend, Sassa will only pay the grant on the following working day.

Where Sassa Grants Are Paid

Bank Account

Permanent grant beneficiaries have the option of having their grants paid directly into their bank account. This is convenient as beneficiaries can access their money at any time after the payment is made by Sassa.

Retail outlets

Sassa grants are paid to selected retailers around the country. The vast geographical footprint of retail outlets makes it easy for grant recipients to find one close to where they live.

Beneficiaries can withdraw their money at any time when the retail outlet is operational. Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer stores, Usave stores and Checkers all distribute social grants.

Mobile Cash Pay Points

Grant beneficiaries can collect their money at mobile cash pay points.

It's important to note that this is not a flexible payment option and beneficiaries may only collect their grant payment for a few hours during a grant payment cycle.
