Recently, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has been auditing their beneficiaries to check if they were eligible for the money that they received previously.

The agency found that many beneficiaries were not deserving of the grant which is when they introduced the “debtor” status.

The “debtor” status meant that those recipients needed to pay back the money they had received from SASSA previously before they could be considered for the current round of COVID-19 SRD grants.

If you have a “debtor” status, you will be notified via SMS that you need to settle your debt. Your application status on the SRD website, Whatsapp, and SRD ops system will also indicate “debtor”.

If you are confused as to why you have been given the “debtor” status, please contact SASSA at 0800 60 10 11.

Please note that you may not appeal for reconsideration if you were identified as a debtor.
