The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides financial assistance to eligible citizens through a variety of grants. These grants are designed to help those who are unable to support themselves financially, including children, people with disabilities, and the elderly. In this guide, we'll explore the different types of grants offered by SASSA and how to apply for them.

Child Support Grant

The Child Support Grant is a monthly grant provided to parents or primary caregivers of children under the age of 18. To be eligible, the child must be a South African citizen or permanent resident, and the household income must be below a certain threshold. The grant amount is currently R460 per month and is paid to the caregiver.

To apply, you will need to provide proof of identity for both yourself and the child, as well as proof of income and residence. Applications can be made at your nearest SASSA office or online through the SASSA website.

Disability Grant

The Disability Grant is a monthly grant provided to individuals with disabilities who are unable to support themselves financially. To be eligible, the individual must be a South African citizen or permanent resident, and their disability must be severe enough to prevent them from working.

The grant amount is currently R1,890 per month and is paid directly to the beneficiary. To apply, you will need to provide proof of identity, medical proof of disability, and proof of income and residence. Applications can be made at your nearest SASSA office or online through the SASSA website.

Old Age Grant

The Old Age Grant is a monthly grant provided to South African citizens or permanent residents who are 60 years or older and are unable to support themselves financially. The grant amount is currently R1,890 per month and is paid directly to the beneficiary. To apply, you will need to provide proof of identity, proof of income and residence, and a bank statement.

Applications can be made at your nearest SASSA office or online through the SASSA website. It's important to note that if you are receiving a pension from an employer or retirement fund, you may not be eligible for the Old Age Grant.

Foster Child Grant

The Foster Child Grant is a monthly grant provided to foster parents who are taking care of a child who is not biologically theirs. The grant amount is currently R1,040 per month and is paid directly to the foster parent.

To apply, you will need to provide proof of identity, proof of income and residence, and a court order granting you custody of the child. Applications can be made at your nearest SASSA office or online through the SASSA website. It's important to note that the grant will only be paid for as long as the child remains in your care and you will need to reapply annually.

Care Dependency Grant

The Care Dependency Grant is a monthly grant provided to caregivers of children with severe disabilities. The grant amount is currently R1,860 per month and is paid directly to the caregiver.

To apply, you will need to provide proof of identity, proof of income and residence, and a medical report confirming the child's disability. Applications can be made at your nearest SASSA office or online through the SASSA website.

It's important to note that the grant will only be paid for as long as the child remains disabled and in need of care, and you will need to reapply annually.
