As mentioned above, the Funza Lushaka bursary is available to enable eligible students to complete a teaching qualification in identified areas of priority.

Expenses covered by the bursary may include tuition fees, accommodation (including meals), books and learning materials, and if possible a small allowance for monthly living expenses.

The allocation to any individual student is capped at a specific value. Where the HEI charges more than the capped value the bursars will have to top up from their own funds.

The bursary covers undergraduate studies such as a 4-year Bachelor of Education degree (B Ed), specializing in Foundation Phase (Grade R – 3), Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 – 6), Senior Phase (Grade 7 – 9) and FET Phase (Grade 10-12); and

Additionally, it also covers post-graduate studies such as a One-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

Combined qualifications are also acceptable such as combined specialization in the Foundation Phase (Grade R – 3) and Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 – 6), or the Intermediate Phase and Senior Phase, or the Senior Phase (Grade 7 – 9) and FET Phase (Grade 10 –12).

Recipients of this bursary are also required to teach at a public school for the same number of years that they received the bursary.

So if you are a Unisa student or you wish to study Education through Unisa and you require extra funding, the Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme can assist you.
