Social grants are grants paid by the South African Social Security Agency to South African citizens that are considered financially disadvantaged. The Sassa grant comes in various types meant to cater to the different needs of its recipients.
These grants include the disability grant; grant for older persons and war veteran’s grant; foster child grant; care dependency grant; child support grant, grant-in-aid and the Social Relief of Distress.
One of the disappointing outcomes that Sassa beneficiaries may encounter is the suspension of their grant. Sassa may choose to suspend your grant if you do not meet the eligibility requirements. But circumstances differ for each grant.
Here are some of the reasons why your Sassa grant may be suspended:
- Changes in circumstances can either in your medical or financial circumstances.
- If you fail to cooperate with SASSA if your grant is being reviewed
- If you are caught committing fraudulent activities or providing fraudulent information. This can include misrepresenting your financial or medical circumstances.
- If you were wrongly awarded a grant.
- If SASSA determines via a review that you are undeserving of a social support grant.
Sassa also reserves the right to review your grant eligibility when they deem fit to do so. However, Sassa will inform you when they plan to review your grant. This process takes place at least three months prior to the date set for your grant to be reviewed.
